JOURNALIST and Zimbabwe Newspapers Beitbridge Bureau Chief Thupeyo Muleya has scooped a top national award for the Customs, Transport Freight Forwarding writer of the year.
He was decorated at Wednesday’s National Journalists and Media Awards ceremony in Zimbabwe’s capital Harare.
Sponsored by Trans Direct, a company in related business, the award is given to a journalist who excels in the reportage of that field.
Contestants were required to submit three articles on 18 of the subjects that also included Business, Sports, Tourism to name a few.
Judges looked at the positive impact of submitted articles had to the community among other key aspects.
Stories were also required to show originalty, investigation, research, effort and persistence.
NJAMA judges were also keen on balance, completeness, fairness and accuracy.
Depth and clarity in the subject topic was also part of the criteria for the 18 categories of the NJAMA awards.
Electronic media for which Muleya also contributes but did not contest required submissions in DVD format for all categories.
A senior government official at Beitbridge said Muleya’s stories had telling influence in the running of Beitbridge border post.
“He among several other relevant reportage has consistently campaigned for a port authority to run the affairs of Beitbridge and other national ports. This will clear confusion at ports ensuring smooth flow of trade as borders should facilitate.
“More often than not government agents clash over responsibilities, ” said the official.
“Muleya’s experience with Customs and Excise, Immigration and related border subjects is vast and purposeful to a growing economy and he is an asset to his employers and the nation at large.”
With limited resources Muleya whose employer has not provided transport over the years covers the wide Beitbridge District while his beat spreads across to other parts of Matabeleland South and the northern tip of South Africa.
The social media at Beitbridge was ubuzz with congratulatory messages for Muleya who dedicated his award to his family at home, at work and his friends.
